KVC 8Lj

After considering vegetables, alpacas, and chickens as serious contenders 8Lj decided on

ALPACAS!!!

We now are researching
  1. What kind of fencing we need (do they jump really high?)
  2. Whether we should process their wool because we get a much higher price for it than the raw product.
  3. Whether we should let them breed?
  4. what kind of shelter they need?
  5. Pollution problems that may occur through keeping large livestock on KVC grounds.

  1. Hi 8Lj. These are very good questions to be asking and show you are thinking about the consequences (things that could happen/be needed). I really like this picture! Dr McMillan

I like where you are heading with the alpacas.
    They are so cute.
With the question about the breeding I think you should not breed them because where are you going to put them all and if you keep breeding them then your field or wherever you are going to put them will not be big enough and food wise it costs money to buy all of it and if you have too many alpacas then it will cost like $500 and it can get even more and lots.
    GOOD LUCK! room 8lj.

  9. Thanks Jennifer from Balaclava for the question/ comment about limited space for alpacas.
I think the idea was that we could breed them and sell the offspring (young alpacas) and make a profit.

Ella, I know someone in the class researched how much poo was created... I will try to find out who it was and ask. We did think that whatever they pooped we would put in the compost.

  11. We found out that alpacas don't jump so we don't have to have a super high fence.

  13. Super to know that - thanks Henry.
Does your Uncle sell the wool or are they just pets? Id love to know how he feels about keeping them. Does he love it? Do they take a lot of time to look after? 8Lj found some great info about looking after them but any hints from people who actually own some would be great!

  14. Hi 8Lj

I have just started planting seeds for early summer harvest and was wondering if you have started to sprout anything yet.
I have been excited by the New Worlds mini garden promotion, it was amazing watching the coconut fibre expand. We are now experimenting at home to see if we can germinate the seeds faster by making small glasshouses for them using old plastic bottles.
    What discoveries have you made.

Looking forward to seeing which veges you choose to plant.

  15. Wow! Expanding coconut? 8Lj, have you been able to make progression on having the alpacas at school. You did some great research and planning about them. I look forward to seeing how things are going with you when I return. Go for it!

  16. Hi everyone!
    We have been busy!
We were offered 2 lambs and the teachers thought this would be a great way to gauge our preparation before investing in alpacas.
The lambs are named Big John and Modamode! They are very friendly and have been a hit!
I will get someone from 8Lj to explain what we have done so far to make sure they are looked after and to add a few photos of our new pets!!!
